Oat Straw is derived from the green stems of the oat plant, and has a rich agricultural and medicinal history. Remains of cultivated oats have been discovered in Swiss caves dating back to around 1000 B.C., although oats were likely used throughout the Mediterranean region even earlier than that. Wild oats were initially found growing among wheat and barley fields and were gradually domesticated as their value became more apparent. Oats became a staple crop across Northern Europe, and indigenous communities across North America used wild plants in the Avena species for poultices to soothe irritated skin.
